Azkena Rock Festival continues to add to its ranks essential bands in different areas of rock. The latest confirmations for the festival include the mythical B-52s, in what will be their last European tour and coinciding with their 40th anniversary. They will be the new headliners, along with the previously announced Stray Cats and Wilco; the recently formed superband Deadland Ritual (with members from Black Sabbath, Guns N’ Roses and Apocalyptica), the lead singer of Pantera, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, interpreting hits from his former band for the first time. They will be joined by Corrosion of Conformity, celebrating the 25th anniversary of their legendary album ‘Deliverance’; Glassjaw, in their third visit to our country in their more than two decades of activity and Meat Puppets, who return with the original formation that had such an influence on bands like Soundgarden and Nirvana, all with exclusive dates. The Azkena Rock Festival will hold its 18th edition on 21-22 June 2019 in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Today it reveals its line-up by days and opens sales for day passes.
The B-52s, the festival’s new headliners, became one of the bands coming from the underground that gained the most visibility through their own merits, thanks to their particular musical style, which found room for the post-punk sound of new wave, surf, 60s pop and all types of retro influences. The band is saying goodbye with a tour that celebrates their 40th anniversary; their concert at the ARF will be the first by the band in our country in over a decade.
Four great musicians have joined forces to form the new project which they call Deadland Ritual. Geezer Butler (bass player and founder of Black Sabbath), Matt Sorum (Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver), Steve Stevens (Billy Idol and Kings of Chaos) and Franky Perez (singer of Apocalyptica) are revolutionising the rock community with their pre-release single, and in 2019 they will release an album that we hope to see in their sole stop in Spain.
The Pantera vocalist will arrive in Vitoria-Gasteiz as Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, with an exclusive, very special show consisting only of classic songs from the repertoire of Pantera, the band that launched Anselmo nearly thirty years ago as one of the most influential figures on the international scene linked to metal.
Sludge, stoner and southern metal will be represented this year at the festival, thanks to Americans Corrosion Of Conformity, who will be making their only stop in our country to celebrate the 25th anniversary of ‘Deliverance’, with Pepper Keenan rejoining the group.
Glassjaw has been crowned one of the most influential bands in the history of post-hardcore through their own merits. We can find proof that they haven’t lost a bit of the visceral quality and honesty that characterises them in ‘Material Control’, their latest release. They will present their new work, which comes to us a solid fifteen years since their last album, in Vitoria on an exclusive date.
With their original formation and also on a single date, the mythical Meat Puppets, one of the bands that helped define alternative rock in the 80s and 90s, and one of the main influences on bands like Soundgarden, Pavement, Dinosaur Jr and Nirvana (Kurt Cobain always named them as one of his favourite groups), has reunited to record their first studio album in many years. In the early nineties, they achieved certain visibility in the mainstream musical segment, gaining international attention. In spite of this, they have never ceased to be a cult band that shines like few others on the independent scene.
In addition, today Inglorious also joins the Azkena Rock Festival as one of the most solid hard-rock bands around today, with a new album under their arm; they are joined by the Swiss Hillbilly Moon Explosion, inspired by rockabilly and the spirit of the fifties; Garbayo, with his solo project after his time in Los Zodiacs and his new work ‘Sonido Forestal’; Surfbort, signed by Julian Casablancas’ label as one of the most promising bands with the most projection at the moment, and Micky & The Buzz, an Italian-Bizkain band playing high energy R&B that interprets jump-blues and 50s rock & roll with the energy of punk rock and a consistent focus on fun and dance.
